Pursuing higher education has always been part of my life goal bucket list. Back in 2013, I was preparing to enroll but great typhoon Haiyan devastated me. After three years, I’m now ready to tackle the challenge of studying again. Yesterday, the announcement of my admission to University of the Philippines Open University just arrived. First semester of classes starts at August. I’m really excited!
Here is the 500 word essay for my admission requirements:
In a world that demands results, an individual must expand and grow to its fullest potential; and in an era where time is an extremely important resource, distance learning is the best option for me. Furthering my education in Information Systems is important to me because I have been fascinated with computers and programming at a tender age of thirteen. I started doing graphic designs and web programming in my early years. In an instant, it connected me to computers unlike anything else – it felt like was an extension of myself.
At seventeen I was invited to work as an in-house Web Designer by an international company and immediately felt that I really belong in this profession. Everything I have achieved so far is because of my love and passion in working with computers and its technology. But despite the years of experience and my insatiable curiosity, I still feel that I haven’t learned enough and there is a huge room for growth.
I have obtained my computer skills and knowledge as a teenager through self study and exploring the areas I needed to learn by viewing sources of code in the internet. Bit by bit, line by line, and code by code, I was able to create fully functional websites by pure research and self-learning, and without guidance from any teachers. My graphic apps related skills has also been polished through self studying and sleepless nights of finding and figuring how things work. And because of this, I can attest that if a person is fully committed and interested in pursuing knowledge and skills, even no guidance would still bear fruitful results; hard work will always be rewarded. That’s why I believe very well that distance learning with the guidance of online teachers and discussions with virtual classmates would be more fun and extremely helpful in my personal improvement.
Information Technology has always been interesting as it is never stagnant – and ever changing. A professional in this field cannot rest and be complacent; in just a few months, new updates are released on softwares and applications. New technologies and new programming languages are released in an even faster pace. Change and growth has been consistent in this profession, and I have never found it boring even once with working with it for more than a decade. Everything about it is always exciting. The change has been fully in sync with my mind, and with my attitude that I always search and get interested for something new that will spark up my life.
Information Technology is the future, and the future is happening right before our eyes. Utilizing distance education is the proof that information systems can bring knowledge and uplift ones consciousness despite the distance. A world connected by technology, virtually bringing the world closer together.
Studying via distance education at UPOU is paramount to me, as I have an incoming opportunity to work abroad in New Zealand by next year. Pursuing it through traditional classroom setting would prove to be difficult for me. Additionally I’m not financially capable of studying at schools abroad. Thus, UPOU’s long distance learning is the perfect avenue to achieve my dreams in furthering my education without missing any professional opportunities.
Expanding my knowledge in Information Systems/Technology, will help me as an individual by building up confidence in my profession and chosen trade. In the future, I would like to give back to the community by participating in IT related conventions, speak and teach in these subjects with full credibility, sharing my knowledge to the youth and the younger generations .
